Hi
Has anyone tried this tube?
I tried it wired as a triode voltage amp for a line stage with a 6CW5
wired as a cathode follower.
The noise level is so low compared to a similar pre using 6SN7's it is
difficult even to tell it is on.{ the EF86 gives nearly as good results}
I use 105 db horns so Pre-amps are a problem to say the least.
Phil.

I assume that is the "posh" version of the EF80. IIRC it (the EF80) was a
bit noisy as an AF pentode. I once read somewhere that it tended to have a
nasty kink that needed careful setting of the bias. I don't think I've
seen it used as a triode; it may well be ok!

The numbering of this valve seems out of step with most. Although the
E88CC is an SQ version of the ECC88, the E80F appears to have a
different spec to the EF80.

Anyone know the history of this valve?

As strange as it may seem, the E80F is comparable to a EF86.
Wired as a triode, this is one beauty of a tube.
I once made a RIAA eq amp with EF86s as triodes, got less noise than a
standard ECC83 schematic.
Don't forget to mount the tube holders on rubber springs!
